- HENSHAW STANEGATE NY 76 NE (North side) 13/47 Causeway House and loose-box 17.6.87 adjoining on east II* Farmhouse and loose-box. Dated 1770 on door lintel. Dressed stone front with squared rubble returns and rear. Heather-thatched roofs under corrugated-iron sheeting. Rebuilt brick chimney. Cross-passage plan with byre and loft in left bay. Raised alternating quoins. Replaced doors and sashes in raised surrounds. Doorway to right of centre has raised plaque inscribed: R T A 1770. Breather and doorway at left. Elongated window surround on ground-floor right; square window surrounds immediately below eaves. Very steeply-pitched roof with right end stack. Single-storey, 2-bay loose box on right return has tooled quoins and doorway with alternating jambs and Dutch door. Very steeply-pitched roof. House and loose-box have reverse-stepped gables. Loft loading bay on left return of house. Interior: one truss with wany beams of heavy scantling visible in loft above byre - principal rafters with 2 collars and trenched purlins are halved and crossed at apex to carry ridge piece. There are probably 2 similar trusses in right half of house. Similar truss in loose-box. An extremely rare survival in the county of a heather-thatched building. ,
