- notes
- Barn and adjoining outbuilding. Barn late C15/C16; outbuilding probably C19. Local grey limestone rubble, barn with local red sandstone dressings; outbuildings with corrugated-iron roof. PLAN: Barn on a west east axis, probably originally 7 bays (8 slots for loft crossbeams) with a small doorway on the north side. Opposed south doorway ruinous but possibly larger at one time. Loft loading door in west end. Outbuilding adjoins at west end with 2 doorways on north side. EXTERIOR: Roofless barn has approximately central segmental-headed chamfered doorway on the north side and 3 ventilation slits; 2 ventilation slits on the south wall, all deeply-splayed. Segmental-headed chamfered loft loading door in west end. The south doorway has evidence of infill with splayed sides, reducing the opening. INTERIOR: The crossbeam slots have stone pads projecting from them. Chamfered stone wall plate. A C19 or early C20 drive shaft with 2 wheels is fixed to the east end wall of the barn on cast-iron brackets. The remains of the original roof has been stored in the adjoining outbuilding. The trusses have short curved feet with tenons for pegging into a timber wall plate; mortised collars and threaded purlins. Several principal rafters survive; common rafters. The outbuilding has 4 pegged A-frame trusses, heavily repaired and augmented with later timbers. The A-frames have butt collars; original purlins, rafters and ridge are missing.
