- Pair of houses. Probably 1860s, designed by JW Rowell, as part of the development around Ellacombe Green, presented to the town in 1859 by Sir Lawrence Palk. Snecked local grey limestone rubble with polychromatic brick and stone dressings; slate roof (replaced with asbestos); stacks with brick shafts. PLAN: On a corner site. Mirror plan pair; overall T-plan. Main rooms in the front block, end on to the street with entrances on the long outer sides. Rear wing at right-angles for services with subsidiary service wings off to the rear. EXTERIOR: 2 storeys. Symmetrical 2-window front to Princes Road with 2 gables, one on either side of a central corbelled chimney stack with 4 shafts. 3-light ground floor windows one to each house with cranked voussoirs, glazed with high-transomed casements. 2-light first-floor windows one to each house, each with cranked brick arch and, above it, a pointed arched tympanum with red brick and stone decoration. The outer return has a red brick string course; front door towards the angle with the service wing with one first floor 2-light casement. The gable ends of the service wings are similarly treated with polychromatic details and tympana. INTERIOR: Not inspected but may retain features of interest. Included for group value. Part of an exceptionally well-planned and designed group of mid C19 workers' housing. Listing NGR: SX9179364414
