notes
Dispensary, in use as offices. Probably 1878. Snecked local grey limestone with Bathstone dressings; slate roof; stack with stone shafts with moulded cornices. PLAN: Small building attached to left end of the hospital. EXTERIOR: Single storey. Asymmetrical 2-window front, with a shallow wing projecting to the front at the left end with a coped gable with kneelers. Moulded stone eaves band to main block. Moulded-arched doorway to right of wing with carved spandrels. 3-light high-transomed stone-mullioned window to right of doorway. Wing has similar 4-light window with relieving arch. INTERIOR: Not inspected but may retain features of interest. The dispensary was intended to give working people the opportunity of medical attendance on payment of a small subscription, replacing the previous scheme of free medical attention. By 1883 the dispensary was self-supporting with 2,580 contributing members. (Ellis CA: An Historical Survey of Torquay, 2nd edition: 1930-: P.437-440.). Listing NGR: SX9117064451
