name
Turnpike Stone On Inner Edge Of Pavement, Under Old Fish Market
notes
Turnpike stone. About 1838. Short, round-headed piece of Devonian limestone, its west face incised with the inscription END OF THE DARTMOUTH & TORQUAY TURNPIKE. The stone appears to be in roughly its original position; it was certainly there before the Old Fish Market was rebuilt in late C20. (Pike J R: Brixham, Torbay: a bibliographical guide: Torbay: 1974-: 11-12; Horsley J E: A Short History of Brixham: Exeter: 1988-: 16). Listing NGR: SX9255556302
