name
Retaining Wall On South East Side Of Southern Quay
notes
Retaining wall buttressing the north-west side of King Street, which runs along the cliff edge overlooking the harbour. Probably C19, the north-east section later than the rest. Devon limestone rubble with some red sandstone. The wall rises to a considerable height and is the dominant feature on the south-east side of the harbour. The later section to north-east has at its right-hand end 3 full-height buttresses. Both sections rise uninterruptedly to form a parapet wall along King Street. This has a chamfered coping of stones on edge along the older section; similar cement coping beyond. The retaining wall stops well short of the north-east end of the harbour and is replaced by the natural Devonian limestone rock-face. Listing NGR: SX9269356245
