HARTBURN HARTBURN NZ 08 NE 9/33 Grotto on south bank of Hart Burn 6.5.52 (Formerly listed with Vicarage as grotto) 11 Grotto c.1760 by Dr. Sharpe. Tall circular chamber cut in sandstone cliff, with twin domed niches above. Within chamber, walls of coursed roughly- squared stone to rear (with chamfered pointed arch and two slits above) to left (with similar unchamfered arch) and to right (with fireplace). A low slab-roofed tunnel, now part collapsed, runs from the Grotto to the bank of the stream; this is said to have been constructed to give bathers a covered access to the water. ,
