- EGLINGHAM AI NU 12 SE (East side, off) 3/143 Charlton Hall GV II* Country house. Late C18, perhaps by William Newton. Tooled-and-margined stone; Welsh slate roof. 2 storeys, 5 bays, symmetrical. Plinth, sill bands, rusticated quoins and modillion eaves cornice. Panelled piers flank 5-step approach to central old half-glazed door with 2-pane fanlight in raised surround with keyed round arch, flanking 6-pane sashes and open pediment. 4 outer windows are longer 12-pane sashes, breaking sill band. 6-pane sashes to 1st floor, that above door flanked by narrow 2-pane sashes; all windows in architraves. Hipped roof with 2 ridge stacks, stepped-and-corniced with panelled shafts. 4-bay returns with similar fenestration; plainer 3-bay kitchen wing to rear left. Venetian stair window to rear, with radial head. Interior: Venetian screen from entrance lobby to hall has archivolt key block carved with convolvulus flowers. Dining room with fluted frieze, drawing room with urn-and-anthemion frieze, library with palmette frieze; all rooms have fielded-panel doors with overdoors matching the friezes, moulded cornices and marble fireplaces with contemporary ironwork. Dog-leg stair with 2 stick balusters per tread, moulded ramped and wreathed handrail, moulded newel, curtail step and carved tread ends. Stair window with Ionic columns and foliage frieze; Rococo ceiling rose above. Stairhead has segmental arch to lobby above entrance. Bedrooms have fielded-panel doors, marble fireplaces and moulded cornices. An unusually complete and unaltered late Georgian interior. ,
